Small Times: News about MEMS, Nanotechnology and Microsystems CRYONICS CONFERENCE BRINGS OUT NANOTECH'S EXTREME OPTIMISTS By Mark Frauenfelder Small Times Correspondent Graphic Designer Robert Freitas NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Dec. 6, 2002 [~] At Alcor's fifth annual Conference on Extreme Life Extension here recently, two well-known scientists presented their visions for the far-out future of nanotechnology. Ralph Merkle and Robert Freitas of Zyvex Corp., a nanotechnology and MEMS research and development company in Richardson, Texas, asked the 200 or so conference attendees to imagine a time in the coming decades when doctors will routinely inject billions of nanosized robots into patients' bodies.
The cold, hard facts on cryonics Such is the breathtaking pace of modern scientific advancement that in the three short years since the technicians at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation famously severed baseball star Ted Williams' head from his torso and deep-froze the parts for anticipated resurrection at some future date, there have been a number of improvements to the preservation process.
Why Cryonics? Human beings are all the same kind of animal and much like many other animals. We exist along with an estimated 5 to 50 million other species which all evolved with survival and reproductive instincts that helped us to avoid danger and threats, and thus to perpetuate ourselves. We human animals are mainly social beings and most of us experience loss when others die, as well as fears of separation or loneliness. Such feelings can be observed in other animals, like elephants, dogs and primates. But unlike these animals and all of the world's other living things, we are the only living creature that knows that it will personally die.
