France : Oocyte matures in the laboratory
On June 5th, 2003, the team of Ren Frydman (A. Bclre Hospital, Clamart) announced the birth of Iris, the first baby born in France thanks to the maternal oocyte in vitro maturation method. This in vitro fertilization technique, in which a supplementary step (oocyte maturation) is carried out in the laboratory, allows women to avoid ovarian stimulation hormone treatments. 700 women in the world would have attempted this treatment and 200 babies would have been born by MIV since 1991.

"Chemoradiotherapy in young women with cancer has substantially improved life expectancy in these patients, but these treatments often cause infertility. One method of preserving fertility is to cryopreserve ovarian tissue," researchers in Germany report. "In this study, an automatic open-vessel freezing system with self-seeding was tested for cryopreservation of murine ovarian tissue; the mouse is a species widely used in human and veterinary medical research.
